Damon Salvatore: A vampire who was turned by Katherine Pierce in 1864. Has a brother named Stefan. Was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War but decided to drop out in order to anger his father. Had a close relationship with his mother before she died. He was abused by his dad before he was turned. The bullet that killed him came from the gun used by his own father when he and his brother tried to free the love of their lives. His brother forced him to turn into a vampire, which later made him promise Stefan an eternity of misery. Doesn't care about what other people say about him. Is on the human blood diet and is not afraid to kill someone whenever its deemed necessary or he is just plain pissed off. Believes that he is the evil, bad brother that doesn't deserve anything good. In the end, he understands that he deserves happiness. Is deeply in love with Katherine Pierce's Doppelganger, Elena Gilbert. Turned Elena's birth mother, Isobel, into a vampire. Best friends with Alaric Saltzman; Elena's history teacher, vampire hunter, and Isobel's ex-husband. Regrets every decision he makes, besides falling in love with Elena. When he first returned to Mystic Falls his mission was to release Katherine Pierce from the tomb underneath the church ruins. His favorite drink is bourbon. He was the first of the two Salvatore brothers to meet Elena. Will sacrifice everything to keep Elena alive. Claims to have no emotions, but in reality he does. Also, he gives nicknames to almost everyone he is close to.

Elena Gilbert: The Doppelganger of the vampire Katherine Pierce. First found by Damon Salvatore on the night when she and her parents went off of Wickery Bridge. She was saved by Stefan Salvatore. She has a brother named Jeremy and her best friends are Caroline Forbes, Bonnie Bennett, and Matt Donovan. Her real parents are Isobel Flemming and her Uncle John Gilbert. Was in a relationship with Matt before she met Stefan. Was used as sacrifice by Klaus in a ritual that would unlock his werewolf half so that he could become a hybrid. Her blood allowed Klaus to successfully create hybrids. Has a close relationship with Tyler Lockwood. Doesn't like when anybody compares her to Katherine. Was in a relationship with Stefan while secretly in love with Damon. Chose Stefan because she believed he was safer than Damon. Ended up with Damon at the end of season 4. Her blood is an asset for a number of different spells. Turned off her humanity in season 4 after her brother was killed Katherine/Silas. She'll do anything to make sure that her loved ones are safe, even if it means giving up her life to save theirs. Never wanted to become a vampire. Was sired to Damon at the beginning of season 4. Doesn't realize how much her life means to the Salvatore brothers.



Stefan Salvatore: A vampire who was turned by Katherine Pierce in 1864. Has a brother named Damon. The first of the brothers to fall for Katherine. Saved Elena from drowning with her parents after they went off of Wickery bridge. Had a close relationship with his father because he didn't get to know his mother before she died. Is on the animal blood diet because whenever he is on human blood, he cannot control his bloodlust. When he first turned, he killed hundreds of people before his friend Lexi found him and taught him how to feed off of animals instead of humans. Was known as the Ripper of Monterey due to the fact that he ripped his victims apart. Everyone believes that he is the good brother before they found out who he really was. Joined Klaus in order to save his brothers life before he died from a werewolf bite. Use to be in a relationship with Klaus' sister Rebekah. Close friends with Caroline Forbes. Was in a relationship with Elena Gilbert from the beginning of season 1 till the middle of season 4. Will do anything to protect Elena, but doesn't give her freedom to make her own decisions. Doesn't think Damon is a good choice for Elena. Thinks history is repeating with him, Damon, and Elena instead of Katherine. Is not as strong as Damon because of his animal blood diet. Is only stronger than Damon when he's on Ripper mode.

Alaric Saltzman: Vampire Hunter who is also friends with a few. Best friends with Damon Salvatore. Was married to Isobel, Elena's mother, before Damon turned her into a vampire. Dated Jenna Sommers, Elena and Jeremy's Aunt. Took care or Jeremy and Elena after Jenna was killed in the sacrifice in Klaus' ritual. Was turned into a vampire by Esther, the Original Witch, in order to kill Klaus and his siblings and rid the world of vampires. Dated Doctor Meredith Fell before he was turned into a vampire. Taught Elena how to fight and kill vampires. Was used as a kind of host for Klaus when he decided to check up and keep watch on Elena before the sacrifice. Was Elena and Jeremy's history teacher. Was killed when Elena drowned because the Original Witch linked them together so if one died, so did the other. Drinking buddies with Damon. Loves Bourbon. Came back from the dead in season 4 when Bonnie Bennet broke the veil that let all supernatural occurrences that died come back. Had to return to the dead when Bonnie put the veil back up. Roots for his best friend, Damon, and Elena to be together. Given a ring from Isobel that allows him to come back to life if killed by anything supernatural.

Jeremy Gilbert: Younger brother of Elena Gilbert. In love with Bonnie Bennett. A member of the Five, a group of magically enhanced Vampire Hunters. Dated Vicki Donovan, who was turned into a vampire by Damon and staked by Stefan, and Anna, who was also a vampire. Tried to become a vampire after Anna was killed by his Uncle John. Was compelled twice by Damon after Elena had asked him to. Has a rough friendship with Tyler Lockwood. Was somewhat friends with Kol when he went to Denver. Was a drug addict. Had the ability to see ghosts after he was shot and brought back to life by Bonnie and the other witches. Was killed by Katherine/Silas. His death caused his sister to flip her emotion switch off. Was brought back to life by Bonnie. Killed Kol.

Klaus Mikaelson: One of the Original vampires. Is a Hybrid; half vampire and half werewolf. Fancies Caroline Forbes. Is over 1,000 years old. Has many siblings. Mother was the Original Witch who had turned them into vampires and also tried to get him killed. Killed Elena in the sacrifice so that he could unlock his werewolf side. Got Stefan to return to his ripper ways. His blood is the cure to a werewolf and hybrid bite. Uses Elena's blood to create his hybrids. Always feels like he is alone in the world. Was once close friends with Stefan. Daggers his siblings whenever he feels that they have somehow gotten in his way or just annoy him. Kills anyone who doesn't listen to him when he wants something. Was once in love with the original Petrova Doppelganger. Now resides in New Orleans with his brother Elijah.

Elijah Mikaelson: The Moral Original Vampire. Always keeps to his word when he promises something. Very dedicated to his family and will do whatever he has to in order to keep them together. Use to be in love with the original Petrova along with Klaus. Fell in love with Katherine when they met back in the 1400s. Promised to help Elena keep her family safe before Klaus's sacrifice ritual. Betrayed Elena and her friends when Klaus made him believe that he was going to take him to see his family. Daggered three times; by Alaric, Elena, and Klaus.

 Rebekah Mikaelson: The only female Original. She assisted her brother, Klaus, in capturing and torturing Elena. Had a relationship with Stefan during his past Ripper phase. She is mildly impulsive and has a very a very small temper. She uses violence to get her point across and to get answers. She wore her mothers and Elena's, vervain necklace before Stefan found it and gave it to Elena. She has always hated her life as a vampire and when she heard about a cure, she would do anything she could to get ahold of it so that she could have a human life. She has a thing for Matt Donovan because he is so good and pure compared to herself. Impulsive and at times misunderstood. Loves easily and recklessly even if it consumes her and secretly craves attention.

Kol Mikaelson: Short tempered Original. Will do almost anything his sister asks of him. Will flirt with any girl that catches his eye and doesn't like to be rejected. Loves to kill as many innocent people as he can and likes to hold a grudge. Has a thing against Damon. He was daggered by Klaus and kept in a coffin for over 100 years. Use to hang out with a group of witches back in the day. Was killed by Jeremy with the help of Elena. Wanted to keep anyone from getting the cure so that Silas was not awoken. When he returned as a ghost, he wanted to get rid of Elena and have the veil completely destroyed so that he could stay on Earth.

Finn Mikaelson: Another member of the Original family who was willing to sacrifice his life in order to kill his siblings. Was kept in a coffin by Klaus for over 900 years. Had a long-lost love named Sage who spent most of her life waiting for Finn's return. Hated his life as a vampire and hated Klaus even more so.

Ester Mikaelson: The Original witch and mother of the Original vampires. Turned her children to keep them safe from the werewolves that would eventually kill them. Was killed by Klaus when he found out that she had cursed him by sealing his werewolf half away. Was magically sealed in a coffin after she was killed by Klaus. Was woken up by Bonnie and her mother, Abby, and used their bloodline to fuel her power. Tried to destroy all vampires by killing her family but failed. Turned Alaric in to a vampire so that he could eliminate her children and all vampires on Earth. Was staked by Alaric after he woke up in transition.

   

Matt Donovan: Quarterback for Mystic Falls High and Elena's first boyfriend and last remaining human out of Elena's group of friends. Was used as a pawn by Katherine to get Tyler to activate his werewolf gene and as a distraction by Damon to get to Elena and Stefan. Dated Caroline before she was turned into a vampire. Didn't know about vampires until Caroline attacked him after she had turned. Helped Sheriff Forbes get information on Caroline and the other vampires before they went after them. Was close friends with Tyler for a while. Didn't really like Stefan when he first met him because he took Elena from him. Works as a busboy at the Mystic Grill. Had a sister named Vicki who was turned into a vampire by Damon when he first came to town and was staked by Stefan in order to protect Elena. Almost killed himself in order to talk to his sister's ghost. Has a neglective mother who comes and goes as she pleases. Has a little thing for Rebekah Mikaelson.

Bonnie Bennett: Witch and best friend to Elena. Is a very powerful witch and has many witch family members. Has an obligation to protect the people of Mystic Falls and those she loves from anything supernatural that may be dangerous. Has tried to kill Damon on countless occasions. Has had her magic stripped from her twice. Has dabbled in Black Magic and Expression. Was in a relationship with Elena's brother, Jeremy. Was killed when she over used her magic. Brought Jeremy back to life after she died. Has helped Elena on countless occasions in order to save those Elena loves and Elena herself. Has teamed up with the Salvatore brothers in order to save Elena. Is close friends with Caroline. Has a problem with vampires and will not think twice in killing one if it keeps those she loves protected. Was being used by Silas to kill 12 witches and help him cross over. Was taught how to use Expression by Professor Shane. Before she learned how to use Black Magic and Expression, every time she used too much magic, she would pass out out of exhaustion. Risked her life for Elena when she was being threatened by Klaus in Alaric's body. Used the power of 100 witches to immobilize Klaus so that Elijah could kill him.

Caroline Forbes: Control-freak vampire who was turned by Katherine when she returned to Mystic Falls as away to initiate a game with the Salvatore Brothers and Elena. Close friends with Elena, Matt, and Bonnie. Dated Matt before she was turned into a vampire. Was abused by Damon when he first returned to town. Has a strong friendship with Stefan. Has some type of attraction to Klaus. Is currently dating Tyler Lockwood. Helped Tyler when he first found out he was a werewolf. Started out her vampire life on Stefan's animal blood diet but immediately switched to human blood. Was a cheerleader at Mystic Falls High before she graduated. Became Miss Mystic Falls. Loves to arrange dances and other special events. Major partyer.

Tyler Lockwood: First successful hybrid turned by Klaus. Was a werewolf after killing one of his classmates when she was compelled by Katherine to attack him. Use to date Matt's sister, Vicki before she was killed. Had a few rough patches with Matt and Tyler. Is currently dating Caroline. Father and those on his father's side of the family carried the werewolf gene. Was helped by Caroline on his first full moon. Bit Damon after he rescued him and Caroline from the tomb the night of Klaus's sacrifice. Is close friends with Matt. Was friends with another werewolf named Jules. His Uncle Mason told him about his life as a werewolf and what he would experience. Was sired to Klaus after he became a hybrid. Went with Caroline's father to try and break his sire bond by shifting 100 times. Had to leave town after he and a few other hybrids tried to kill Klaus.

Katherine Pierce: The first doppelganger and the vampire responsible for turning Damon and Stefan. Is in love with Stefan and just used Damon. Pitted Damon and Stefan against each other because she couldn't choose who she really wanted. Will do what she wants without any care for who she gets hurt or killed in the process. Makes witches pledge themselves to her as payment for something she did for them. Is very manipulative and selfish. Has been running from Klaus for over 500 years after she turned. Klaus killed her family. Was and is in love with Elijah. Aided in the death of Jeremy Gilbert when she fed his blood to Silas in order to get the cure so that she could get her freedom from Klaus. Was sealed in the tomb after the Masquerade ball by Damon. Got out after Elijah was daggered. Had a daughter before she was turned. Is from Bulgaria. Has tried to kill Elena multiple times. Has broken Damon's heart a number of times since she returned to Mystic Falls.

Isobel Flemming: Elena's birth mother and Alaric's ex-wife. Was turned by Damon when she was looking for vampires. Met Katherine after she turned and has been allies with her ever since. Returned back to Mystic Falls to see Elena and get Jonathon Gilbert's device so that her ex-boyfriend, John, could get rid of all the vampires, including Damon and Stefan. Researched vampires and anything supernatural before she was turned. Worked at Duke University. Died after she took off her daylight necklace and let herself burn in the sun after she had kidnapped Elena and apologized to her.

John Gilbert: Jeremy's uncle and Elena's birth father. Vampire hunter and member of the council in Mystic Falls. Has a deep hatred for vampires and has tried to kill Damon. Gave up his life the day of Klaus's sacrifice in order to keep Elena human. Was hated by most of his family members, even his own daughter. Learned how to hunt vampires at a young age. Has a ring that was passed down from his family that allows him to come back to life after being killed by anything supernatural.

Sheriff Liz Forbes: Sheriff of Mystic Falls and mother of Caroline. Use to believe that all vampires were monsters until she accepted that her daughter is one. Helps the Salvatore Brothers and her daughter whenever something goes wrong. Is still a member of the council. Was trained to take down vampires when she was young. Tried to kill Damon and Stefan when she was told they were vampires. Has an odd friendship with Damon. Was almost killed by Silas but her daughter saved her.

Carol Lockwood: Mayor of Mystic Falls after the death of her husband and mother of Tyler. Tried to get Caroline killed after she found out that she was a vampire. Also knows about vampires and has recently accepted that her son is half vampire half werewolf. Member of the council. Was killed by Klaus on Christmas after Tyler's and the other hybrids attempt at killing him. Likes to flirt with Damon.

Mason Lockwood: Uncle to Tyler and first werewolf to appear in Mystic Falls. Fell in love with Katherine after he learned that he was a werewolf. Helped her track down the moonstone. Was killed by Damon when he stabbed a hot poker into his chest and then pulled out his heart. Came back as a ghost and had his revenge on Damon then led him to a cave that would help them track down the father of the Originals, Mikael. Almost had Damon and Stefan killed when he told Sheriff Forbes what they were.

April Young: Daughter of Pastor Young and old friend of Elena's. Friends with Rebekah and has a minor crush on Matt. Became the new Miss Mystic Falls. Was almost killed twice by vampires. Was used as bait by Conner when he first came into town. Was babysitted by Elena. Found out about vampires and other supernaturals from Rebekah. Came to town after the death of her father.

Meredith Fell: Doctor and girlfriend to Alaric after Jenna's death. Knows about vampires because she uses their blood to heal her patients. Blood-jacked Damon when he went to visit her about the murder of her ex-boyfriend. Used his blood on Elena after she hit her head when Damon, Stefan, and Tyler went to rescue her from Klaus. Assisted Damon when he got hit with arrows connected to 2 bombs.

Emily Bennett: Witch who worked for Katherine back in 1864. Created the daylight rings that Damon and Stefan use. Is the one who wrote most of the spells in Bonnie's Grimoire. Very powerful witch who possessed Bonnie using a necklace that was passed down through the Bennett line. Spirit lives in the old witch house. Very strict in keeping the balance in nature.

Lexi Branson: Close friends with Stefan and taught him how to feed off of animals instead of humans. Was staked by Damon when she came to visit Stefan on his birthday. Loves Bon Jovi. Helped Elena with Stefan when he returned to his Ripper ways. Went to help Damon flip his switch back on back in the 70s. Knows how to have a good time. Turned her boyfriend and love of her life into a vampire.

Jenna Sommers: Aunt of Elena and Jeremy. Was turned into a vampire by Klaus for his sacrifice as a way to get back at Damon for taking his first vampire. Dated Alaric before she was turned. Friends with Andie Starr. Was still going to college while she was taking care of Elena and Jeremy. Didn't really like Damon when he first came to town. Freaked out when she first found out about vampires.

Anna: Vampire from 1864 who returned to Mystic Falls with the hopes to open the tomb and free her mother, Pearl. Fell in love with Jeremy Gilbert. Was killed by John Gilbert on Founder's Day. Gave her blood to Jeremy so that he could turn into a vampire. Returned as a ghost when Jeremy was brought back to life after he was shot.

Galen Vaughn: Vampire hunter and member of the Five. Kidnapped and tortured Damon to get to Bonnie so that he could get to Silas and kill him. Has been living on an island where Silas was located. Was left in the cave where they found Silas by Rebekah and starved to death. Came back as a ghost after Bonnie put the veil down and tried to get the cure so that he could kill Silas.

Conner Jordan: Vampire hunter and another member of the Five. Attacked April and used her as bait to get to any vampire at her father's funeral. Took werewolf venom from Tyler so that he could make bombs and bullets laced with it to use against vampires. Wore gloves laced with vervain to find out if someone was a vampire or not. Taught Jeremy what it meant to be a member of the Five. Was killed by Elena when he kept Matt and Jeremy hostage at the Grill. Haunted Elena after she killed him to try and get her to kill herself. Came back as a ghost to threaten Elena to hand over the cure or he would blow up Mystic Grill. Was interrupted by Alaric in his pursuit for the cure.

Rose: Vampire who's blood was responsible for turning Katherine. Has been running from Klaus for over 500 years. Captured Elena with the help of her friend Trevor so that she could get her freedom from Elijah. Had a one night stand with Damon. Was bitten by a werewolf and was staked by Damon to remove her from her pain. Believes that Damon is the best person for Elena because of how much he challenges her and her life.

Andie Starr: News Anchor and one of Damon's "distractions" from Elena. Friends with Jenna. Was killed by Stefan when he went back to his Ripper ways as a way to get Damon and Elena to stop looking for him. Helped Damon with finding locations and other things having to do with Stefan when he left with Klaus.

Jules: Werewolf who came to Mystic Falls searching for Mason. Responsible for the death of Rose. She and her boyfriend, Brady, kidnapped and tortured Caroline as a way to get Damon and Stefan to hand over Tyler. Left town with Tyler to help him in his new life as a werewolf. Was used as the werewolf in Klaus's sacrifice after Damon rescued Tyler. Turned Tyler against all his friends when she told him that Damon killed Mason.
